Voice / Video Over IP (Internet Protocol) Options for the Center for Lifelong Learning

Skype

Skype™ is a great, hugely-popular tool for live VoIP and VidoIP communications. This free, downloadable instant messaging system allows you to talk for free from your computer to up to four other computers anywhere in the world (as long as they have Internet access and are also running Skype). New additions to the system allow those with a web camera to talk face-to-face, again at no charge, and the old familiar chat option is also available.

Skype loads automatically upon computer start-up, and, if you choose, those to whom you have given permission will be notified when you are online. WSCLL uses Skype to communicate with students, and groups of students, who may on occasion be outside the United States and Canada, or who may prefer the immediacy of instant messaging or the ability to use a web cam to meet face-to-face with WSCLL personnel. To download Skype, simply click on the link in the right column of this page.

MSN Messenger

MSN Messenger is freely available as a download from the Microsoft™ website www.microsoft.com, or simply by clicking on the link in the right column of this page. Messenger provides an expansive set of tools including chat, video and audio conference, and file transfer. It is a good tool for collaboration and communication that is one of the industry standards.
