What is a Hybrid Course?

Some students learn best when they have face-to-face contact with a professor during the course of the semester. If that's you, then you might consider registering for a hybrid class. Hybrid students receive CD-Rom materials and complete their class much in the same way that standard CLL classes are completed. However, there are one or two class meetings with a professor during the course of a hybrid class. During these classes students hear lectures, discuss concepts with fellow students, and ask many of their questions. One feature that students particularly appreciate is that a hybrid professor will travel to them. Once a group of students - often from a church or a group of churches - is developed, Western Seminary will send professors to the students' city to teach a hybrid class. We currently have hybrid locations in Reno, Tri-Cities, Seattle, and Bakersfield. You can opt to attend a hybrid class at one of these locations, or if you're aware of at least ten other students in your area you can ask Western Seminary to develop a hybrid location where you live. (Please note that you cannot receive residential credit for a hybrid class.)

What are the benefits?

Students - Seminaries are unique in their ability to provide deep theological and biblical education with a breadth of ministry training from classic pastoral wisdom. Hybrid courses in particular provide students the
benefit of distance education (their time frame and schedule) the with benefit of a live course setting (interaction with other students and the professor).

Churches - By partnering with Western Seminary in helping to develop leadership with greater understanding of God’s Word, sharpened ministry skills, and a deepened love for God you will reap blessings within your local church and your community. You can also relieve a pressure for developing

What is the time commitment?
Western operates on a 15 week semester. Regardless of the type (CD, Hybrid, or In-Ministry) all classes will have 45 hours of learning incorporated into each credit. The ratio of “lecture” to homework is typically 1:2.

So a 1-credit course will have 15 hours of “lecture” and 30 hours of homework total, typically broken into 1 hour of “lecture” per week and 2 hours of homework per week.

2 Credit Course: 2 Hours of Video and 4 Hours of Homework per Week
4 Credit Course: 4 Hours of Video and 8 Hours of Homework per Week

Estimates for In-Ministry Courses: In ministry courses incorporate the student’s current ministry directly into the homework thus shortening additional time commitments for earning seminary credit.
